The Hidden Impact of Addiction on Family Members

Addiction impacts the entire family, not just the individual struggling with it. As a sibling of an addict, I experienced firsthand how family attention often focuses solely on the addict, leaving others to navigate their pain alone. Growing up, my parents were consumed with my brother’s addiction, and I felt invisible—even when I tried to express how it affected me. Addiction truly is a family disease, with everyone impacted, yet many families fail to see the broader emotional toll. It’s important to recognize and support all members of the family during such challenging times.
